10 Things That Confuse Me About 'A Christmas Story'

Due to some scheduling snafus on my part, I'm stuck in NY on Christmas Day instead of being miserable with my family in St. Louis. Oh, woe is me! With absolutely nothing to do, I had assumed, like any normal human being, that I'd turn to booze to keep me company. Instead, I find myself absolutely transfixed by the 'A Christmas Story' marathon currently airing on TBS. As I type this, I'm starting my fifth viewing. No matter how much I try, I cannot turn it off! It's not even so much that I'm enjoying watching this movie -- I'm just so fascinated and perplexed. So much so that, to pass the time, I'm creating a list of the ten things that confuse me about 'A Christmas Story.' (Also: Please help me.) 1.) If we're going by the actors' ages, Ralphie's dad is 17 years older than Ralphie's mom. How is this never explained? Not even in a throwaway, "When I met your father, he was teaching a course while I was a student," type line. I would watch a prequel based on the mother and father and the story of how they met. My only hope is that it's not creepy. Also, when the parents were being cast, how was this not a concern? "Oh, whatever, no one will notice." Well, after watching this movie five times today, I did notice. 2.) Who is that strange goggle-wearing kid waiting in line with Ralphie and his brother to see Santa? What a loon. Also, he's my favorite character in this movie. I mean, he's got this look on his face like he's about to stab someone, then utters nonsense like, "I like 'The Wizard of Oz.'" According to IMDb, the actor's name is David Svoboda, and he only has two other credits: the most notable being the writer of a short called 'The Last Blow Job.' (Also, just in case David Svoboda happens to have a Google alert set up for himself: Hi, David.) 3.) Scotty Schwartz plays a character named Flick. (As an aside, Flick also wears goggles, but never over his eyes. The goggles remain permanently attached to his headwear. Was this a thing in the 1940s? I can only assume since two halfway prominent characters are wearing pilot-type goggles, it must be.) Is Flick his real name? Or is this a nickname? I've never met anyone in my life with the name Flick. According to something called babynamespedia.com, Flick is a very unpopular girl's name. When I was in high school, I started referring to my friend Dennis as "Flick," just to see if it would take off as a viable nickname. Not surprisingly, this did not last. 4.) Is this a good movie? I used to think that it was, but now I'm not so sure. I've probably seen 'A Christmas Story' 50 times in my life, though, without the sense of nostalgia associated with 'A Christmas Story,' would I honestly ever watch it? And where is this sense of nostalgia coming from? 'A Christmas Story' is set in the early 1940s, the majority of people who enjoy this movie have never celebrated a Christmas in the early 1940s. Is this '80s nostalgia? Is it just the sense that it reminds me of my younger self watching a movie set in the 1940s? 5.) In what child's fantasy does a cowboy wear glitter? Ralphie wants a BB Gun. Before Ralphie gets his BB gun, he dreams of a scenario in which he saves his family from bandits by using his BB gun. Of course, in this scenario, Ralphie's cowboy is wearing glitter. I only bring this up because later in the film, Ralphie is mortified when he's forced to wear a pink bunny outfit -- which makes no sense because the glitter cowboy outfit appears to be much more embarrassing. 6.) OK, speaking of BB guns: Am I the only one who agrees with every reasonable character in this movie that purchasing a BB gun for a 9-year-old child is just a bad idea? No good can come out of anyone owning a BB gun. It's certainly not an effective enough weapon to reasonably defend oneself from true danger, or to scare up some game -- if you're into those sorts of things. When I was 10, my dad bought me a BB gun. I remember taking it outside, aiming at a bird in a tree, killing the bird, and then running into the house crying because I just killed a bird. I never touched that BB gun again. Moral of the story: BB guns are evil. 7.) When Ralphie's father receives a bowling ball as a gift from his wife, he emits a high-pitched, "thanks a lot," after the weight of the ball is dropped in his lap. Is this Ralphie's father's attempt at humor? If so, it's so unlike the character during the duration of the rest of the film. Was it Darren McGavin's attempt at some sort of improvisational humor? Or was Ralphie's father actually seriously injured from the weight of the bowling ball, causing a drastic change in his vocal patterns? I keep rewinding this scene and, honestly, I can't tell. 8.) The voiceover has always driven me a bit nuts. I mean, yes, Jean Shepherd has an affable enough voice. Calming, even. But I don't at all buy that in the future Ralphie will sound like Jean Shepherd. (In the future, Ralphie will sound a lot like Peter Billingsley and will direct a not great movie called 'Couples Retreat.') So, let's assume 'A Christmas Story' takes place in 1940. That means that the 9-year-old Ralphie is 52 when he's narrating this story for us in 1983 -- or just a couple of years older than Tom Cruise is right now. I understand puberty can have a drastic effect on a male human's voice, but not to this extent. At the very least, Ralphie grew up to be a heavy smoker. 9.) How did every single student receive a pair of fake teeth for the prank that was pulled in Miss Shields' class? This seems like a very elaborate and slightly expensive prank for a group of nine-year-olds. And what was supposed to be accomplished by this? Was there a specific person who was being targeted by the prank for having bad teeth? If so, this seems needlessly mean, too. 10.) Ralphie's father seems to be a bit of a prick. I guess that's the point, but when Ralphie accidentally says "fuck" while helping his father change a tire, the old man's true dickishness really comes out. Look, this could have been a really nice father-son moment between Ralphie and his father. You know, "Heh, we've all said it, son." Nope! Instead, Ralphie's father wastes absolutely zero time ratting him out to Ralphie's mother, with an end result of a bar of soap shoved into Ralphie's mouth. Seriously, what a prick. Matt Damon and Tony Gilroy: The Way Your 'Bourne' Feud Sausage is created

A week ago, Matt Damon made waves when he was cited as stating that Tony Gilroy -- the credited film writer on the 3 'Bourne' films and also the director from the approaching 'Bourne Legacy' -- handed inside a script for 'The Bourne Ultimatum' which was "unreadable." Stated the star to GQ, "This can be a career-ender. I am talking about, I possibly could put this factor on eBay and it might be game over for your dude. It's terrible. It is embarrassing. He was getting a try, essentially, and that he required his money and left." Harsh words! Ones that Damon immediately regretted, telling GQ it was "douchey" of him to take-the-record together with his displeasure in Gilroy. The Damon quasi-apology tour ongoing around the KCRW show 'The Business,' where Damon told host -- and THR reporter -- Kim Masters that the reason behind his episode had related to 'Bourne' being shoved in the face during the group of 'Elysium' in Vancouver. "[The offices] opened up up right outdoors my trailer," he stated. "I had been seeing this every single day, after which I returned to NY and did this interview and type of blurted it. ... It had been idiotic of me to express anything. In the finish during the day, it's between me and Tony, and we'll decipher it or we will not." Damon is wishing he figures things out. Despite professing confidence within the Gilroy-directed 'Bourne Legacy' and star Jeremy Renner, he hopes revisit the series as Jason Bourne later on. "I believe if ['Bourne Legacy'] does not work, we are able to just neglected and pretend it did not happen, and that'd be fine. However I expect that it'll work and just allow us to as we did a different one, which I'd like to do.Inch That other the first is likely contingent on director Paul Greengrass, with whom Damon makes two 'Bourne' films. It's largely assumed that Damon will not do another 'Bourne' without him. [via THR] [Photo: Getty] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen Trailer: Eating, Praying, and Loving Upstream

I don’t know if you can tell by its freakishly quirky title, but Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is freakishly quirky. Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, and a suddenly super-droll Kristen Scott Thomas star in what appears to be a Middle Eastern-set romcom with kooky supporting characters. There’s also a chance that it’s an Eat, Pray, Love for downtrodden white men, which would be despicable. You figure it out. Three things I’m sick of: 1) Ukuleles. 2) Ewan McGregor spending 2011 sauntering around like every movie is a Pepcid AC commercial. 3) That is all. At any rate, hooray for Kristen Scott Thomas, who seems intriguing in what could be a desperately nutty role. Emily Blunt is given little to do again, which reiterates her work in The Adjustment Bureau. And I guess I’ve already torn down Ewan McGregor. I can just guess his full arc here, and it’s not a thrilling one. Though it is fun to say “Ewan” and “Yemen” in an Uma/Oprah-style rally. However, I’m inspired by director’s Lasse Hallstrm whimsy — this is the guy who, in addition to directing The Cider House Rules, spent the 1970s directing every ABBA video under the sun. That’s a man who knows the power of sea-green jumpsuits and beige lipstick. We need him. And therefore, we need this not to suck. Here’s hoping self-aware, but un-obnoxious fun is “The Name of the Game.” Verdict: Slightly baiting. ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ Trailer [Yahoo!]

Ben Kingsley Put In Ender's Game

He'll play a war heroIt appears there's apt to be a little Hugo reunion on Ender's Game, as author/director Gavin Hood has cast Ben Kingsley to star inside the sci-fi film alongside youthful lead Asa Butterfield. Hood has modified Orson Scott Card's classic sci-fi novel for Odd Lot Entertainment, and selected Butterfield to see Ender Wiggin, a prodigy who becomes part of mankind's war against a annoying alien race known to as Formics. Rising quickly using the ranks within the Fight School, Ender is revealed just like a master tactician.True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld looks vulnerable to play fellow School warrior Petra Arkanian, now Kingsley is aboard to see Mazer Rackham, popular war hero many had thought was dead (spoiler!). Harrison Ford remains chased to see gruff School commander Colonel Hyrum Graff, there's however no official offer place yet. Can it be just us, fellow site visitors, or can you kinda wish the casting of people two figures was remedied?Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci may also be aboard as producers, while using plan to start shooting in February. It seems that Card's novel may ultimately be analyzed as they are marked "unfilmmable" and hang just before the cameras...

Morgan Creek Co-Chairman Rick Nicita Considers Exit as Deal Winds Down (Exclusive)

Ever since an anonymous actress decided to sue the Internet Movie Database for allegedly using her credit information to post her age, the lawsuit has engendered great discussion. Last week, the general counsel for the Screen Actors Guild stood up for the woman's right to pursue her lawsuit in anonymity, filing a declaration in Washington federal court that stated that the woman's fears of beingpigeon-holed as an "over 40" actress andblacklisted for being a "complainer" were legitimate.our editor recommendsSAG Says Woman Who Sued IMDb for Revealing Age Has 'Legitimate' Fear of Being BlacklistedIMDb Strikes Back at 'Selfish' Actress Suing Over Age Disclosure (Exclusive)SAG and AFTRA Condemn IMDb Revealing Performers' AgesActress Sues IMDb for $1 Million for Revealing Her Age On Friday, IMDb responded by dismissing the woman's fears of retaliation as unreasonable. The popular entertainment information website gives three reasons why this actress -- and perhaps everyone in Hollywood -- shouldn't have misgivings about coming forward to complain publicly. Remember the old adage about there not being any such thing as bad publicity? PHOTOS: Crazy Cases! 18 Outrageous Entertainment Lawsuits The $1 million lawsuit against IMDb (and its parent company, Amazon.com) will eventually be adjudicated on such issues as the terms of service for signing up to the premium version of the site, privacy, fraud, and perhaps a First Amendment right to publish truthful information. But for right now, the main drama is happening on a quirky procedural issue testing the plaintiff's wish to proceed as a "Jane Doe." The issue will be decided by a judge who will have to balance the woman's fears of retaliation against the defense's need for information in order to fairly fight allegations. Up until last week, iMDb mostly focused on promoting the latter cause, which isn't to say there weren't any harsh words for the adversary. Using the federal court to censor the truth was "selfish," IMDb argued. Now, perhaps prompted by the declaration submitted by SAG lawyer Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, and the subsequent press attention, iMDb is knocking down the anonymous' woman's supposed fears of retaliation by giving three reasons why they are unfounded. 1. The woman is overestimating IMDb. "IMDb.com is a website -- not a studio, casting agency or employer of actors," says its attorney Elizabeth McDougall at Perkins Cole in the brief. "Although it is used by the entertainment industry, it is not a 'player' in that industry." McDougall argues that the website is merely a tool and "not particularly popular in the entertainment industry." Given a choice between taking IMDb's side and the actress' side, the defense says the answer is clear. "Plaintiff has and will continue to have support for some in the industry for her lawsuit," says the brief. Of course, it only takes a few powerful studio execs to decide not to cast the actress. IMDb says the prospect doesn't rise to substantial, severe harm. "Courts have repeatedly and specifically held that threats of termination, blacklisting or related negative employment retaliation are insufficient to warrant anonymity." 2. There hasn't been any retaliation so far and the public will make sure there won't ever be. IMDb already knows the woman's identity. The company previously submitted documents in the case about its suspicions and her lawyer confirmed these suspicions in a sealed document. The brief mentions this and then goes on to state: "To be clear, Defendants have never retaliated against Plaintiff (or anyone else) for complaining regarding its practices. And regardless of this Court's ruling on its motion, Defendants do not intend to retaliate against Plaintiff. Requiring Plaintiff to identify herself to the public is not going to change that. Indeed, if there were risk of retaliation, that risk is mitigated by the public and judicial scrutiny placed on Defendants through this action." Last week, the woman submitted a declaration saying that iMDb had her account "flagged" and wouldn't publish certain of her screen credits. The company dismisses those allegations as vague and unsupported. It's interesting to note that upon the filing of the case, IMDb decided to proceed extremely cautiously by not tipping off the woman's identity. What would have been the repercussions for doing so? 3. The woman is too thin-skinned. The plaintiff's attorney has pointed to more than 750 news articles on this lawsuit (including our extensive coverage here) and has submitted 22 pages of supposedly harmful statements directed at the actress in reaction to the lawsuit. IMDb says it doesn't matter. "While Plaintiff alleges that so-called 'harmful messages regarding the lawsuit' would 'worsen' if her identity is revealed, she provides no evidence that the comments would escalate into anything beyond what they are -- off-hand chatter on the Internet," argues the company. The comments may be unflattering, but that doesn't mean they add up to a reasonable fear of harm, says IMDb. "If these comments bother Plaintiff, she need not read them." Actors get hired partly on their basis to drive box office. Negative sentiment from the public could have casting repercussions, or at least give casting directors an excuse to hide age discrimination. That isn't to say it's the court's responsibility to shield the woman from negative reaction and bad press. Is there a difference between legitimate rebuke and illegitimate retaliation? IMDb believes retaliation has to rise above mere "embarrassment." Expect a hearing and result on this question soon. The kids cable network has greenlighted a third film as well as a 20-episode series of 11-minute self-contained episodes. The move comes on the heels of last month’s debut of Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, which delivered 5.7 million total viewers. The series is slated to start production at the end of the year for a premiere in early 2012. It will be followed by Fred 3‘s debut later in the year. Like the first 2 movies, the third one and the series star Lucas Cruikshank and are based on the Fred character the teen comic created in a series of YouTube videos. The series marks Fred‘s return to the short-form it originated in online. “It will be a mash-up of the original Fred and what we have done with the movies,” Brian Robbins said. Robbins’ Varsity Pictures and The Collective, which together financed the first movie, are back as producers of the new film and series. Cruikshank, Varsity’s Robbins and Sharla Sumpter-Bridgett and The Collective’s Evan Weiss and Gary Binkow are executive producing. Cruikshank first introduced Fred Figglehorn, a fictional 6-year-old who has a dysfunctional home life and anger management issues, on a Fred YouTube channel, which launched in April 2008. A year later, the channel had more than one million subscribers and got the attention of Robbins and management-production company The Collective. “It’s amazing,” Robbins said. “Two years ago, Lucas was a kid making videos from his house in Nebraska. Now he’s got 3 movies and a series.”

She gave an interview to NBC News after her release. "My charge was throwing Molotov cocktails and destroying public property," she said. "If I throw a rock I'd hit the back of the head of the protester in front of me... that claim was so ridiculous, yet I was in prison for 36 hours because of it." Noujaim was not abused, as some journalists have claimed to be. Her phone and camera were confiscated, though, and she said all she did to incite the arrest was flee an area filled with tear gas clouds. "If that happens to me, imagine what happens to a kid who gets picked up off the street who doesn't have all of these connections," she said. Noujaim has been working in Tahrir Square protests for 10 months for a film about Egypt's revolution. She admitted in the interview that the process was slow. "These changes take time," she said, "and I don't want to put this gigantic blame on the poor kids in the police or the poor kids in the army." Control Room, her 2004 documentary about Al Jazeera and the way news organizations covered the invasion of Iraq, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, a DGA Award and a WGA Award. But in all seriousness, he blamed the group members' looks for their exit. "Girls didn't like them," Cowell said. "Groups are always difficult but I think someone like Drew is very good in that she speaks to teenagers like a teenager -- that's part of her appeal. They're a bit older, but it's the same principle." PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Behind the Scenes As The Top 11 Work Out the Week's Performances As for LeRoy Bell, the unlikely 60-year-old finalist who stole America's heart with his velvety voice and sweet disposition, Cowell doubts ageism was at work. "It was personality-ism," the head judge told the Hollywood Reporter. "You've really got to pop now, you've got to make people want to vote for you when you're competing with people like Drew or Rachel [Crow] or particularly what Melanie [Amaro] did Tuesday night. At this point, you make a statement and I always felt with LeRoy that he was slightly embarrassed that he had to compete with 13 ort 14-year-olds because he's a man and he's got dignity. And I kind of get it, but I felt that he didn't quite let himself go in the way that Josh [Krajcik] lets himself go." Speaking of letting things go, it seems Reid isn't holding a grudge when it comes to Cowell's verbal assault the other night. "L.A. was a little bit frosty at the beginning, particularly when he saw the playback of the show," Cowell cracked. "I don't think he liked that very much, because I had the last word." PHOTOS: Get to Know 'X Factor's' Top 17 Finalists Still, Cowell insists it's mostly for show. "I explained to L.A. before we did the show that we're going to have that kind of relationship," he said. "If you like each other, you can have that kind of banter." But Cowell isn't about to let the Demi Lovato slip go. To recap: Reid criticized Drew for singing the hit "Skyscraper" saying it was music for 40-year-olds. Lovato, who sings the song, is 19. "We haven't stopped talking about it," Cowell said with a chuckle. "I'm having the album delivered to his dressing room." Cowell adds that he was as surprised as anyone that Reid "didn't know the song," but he also saw it as an opportunity. "I loved it because I knew he was going to have a problem with [Drew], that's been going on for a while," Cowell explained. "So when he dropped the ball on Demi, it was like, 'Fine, now I'm going to say what I want to say.'" And did he ever. Cowell called Reid's insights "stupid, inaccurate rubbish" among a slew of other insults, leaving the Epic Records chairman dumbfounded. But no hard feelings -- minutes later, the two were kibitzing outside the X Factor stage door. It is television, after all. 'X-Files' Actor John Neville Dies: Remembering The Well-Well-stored Guy

British actor John Neville died late the other day at 86. Theater buffs might remember him just like a respected Shakespearean actor who came out in each one of the Bards plays movie mavens might know him from his starring role in Terry Gilliams The Adventures of Baron Munchausen." But in my opinion, John Neville was and then try to will be the Well-Well-stored Guy. If you're no X-Phile I have a bit of cause of you (we could discuss the key reason why you are not an X-Phile another time): On Chris Carters groundbreaking Tv program The X-Files, John Neville carried out one of several nameless recurring figures (most likely probably the most infamous being Cigarette Smoking Guy). CSM and Well-Well-stored Guy were people in the Syndicate, an worldwide quantity of super-secretive changers and shakers who tried to thwart the efforts of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully inside their search for the real truth about extra-terrestrials. As WMM, John Neville came out in most likely the most crucial cases of "The X-Files" throughout its middle seasons. A Few Things I loved in regards to the character, aside from his amazingly awesome Britishness, was his undisguised loathing of CSM which figures unrefined techniques of hiding the truth. Even though he was part of the Syndicate, WMM shown moral ambivalence in regards to the work of his shadow organization and empathy for Mulder and Scully. The Well-Well-stored Guy met his finish in 1998, throughout the initial "X-Files" movie. Soon after giving Mulder what he needed to discover and save his beloved partner Scully, and telling him to trust nobody, WMM died in the spectacular vehicle explosion. It absolutely was a suitable finish with this particular legendary TV character. Reveal what you consider inside the comments section and also on Twitter!

Brett Ratner out as Oscar producer

RatnerThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirms that Brett Ratner has resigned as producer of this year's Oscar telecast following his use of a gay slur on Friday evening and his raunchy interview on "The Howard Stern Show" Monday. In an open letter, Ratner said he resigned to Academy president Tom Sherak this morning by phone and that he "apologizes publicly and unreservedly." "I should have known this all along, but at least I know it now: words do matter," Ratner said. "Having love in your heart doesn't count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and bigoted." In the statement from the Academy, Sherak's position represents a 180-degree shift from yesterday when he said, "We think Brett's apology was sincere and showed that he understood how insensitive he had been. We believe his apology reflects who he really is at heart." By late Tuesday he had accepted Ratner's resignation. "He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Sherak said in a statement. "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent." Outrage over Ratner's comments has been building over the past few days among Academy members and the industry. Sherak announced Ratner's appointment in August, and the "Tower Heist" director was slated to work alongside veteran producer Don Mischer. Sherak cited Ratner's comedic experience as being a big selling point in hiring him. Though Ratner has always been a controversial choice, he was instrumental in bringing Eddie Murphy on as host in September and had hired several veteran comedy writers to breathe new life into the show. It is unclear whether Murphy will stay on as host. Contact Christy Grosz at christy.grosz@variety.com

Jim AmosJim Amos was born into the movie biz -- his father owned a chain of movie theaters and his mother worked for Columbia Pictures. When "I grew up, that was what we did, we went to movies," says Amos, who is now Sony Pictures' prexy of domestic distribution. Shame Trailer Hits The Net

McQueen & Fassbender, erotic dramatistsShame is a movie about sex. A movie about Brandon (Michael Fassbender) and sex. Not love, not intimacy, not romance... sex.So as you'd expect, the world's first trailer for the Hunger director's second film (both with Fassbender starring)is pretty, well, sexual, slapping you with images of Fassbender writhing, kissing, charming and generally being a degenerate human being. We also see glimpses of Brandon's sister, Cissy (Mulligan), whose sudden arrival (and indefinite stay) ruins his perfectly constructed life, but it's definitely the Fassbender show, pure and simple.Conjuring up an atmospheric world of meaningless sex, addiction and dependency, it's pretty moving stuff from McQueen and Fassbender, and it only makes us want to watch the film even more.Funny that, it being a trailer an' all, but there you go:they've got us hooked, good and proper. Shame (no pun intended)we're going to have to wait until January 12 next year before we can see it in the cinema.

A Primary Stages presentation of a play in one act conceived by Susan Rose and Joan Stein, written by Leslie Ayvazian, Brooke Berman, David Cale, Jessica Goldberg, Beth Henley, Lameece Issaq, Claire LaZebnik, Lisa Loomer, Michele Lowe, Marco Pennette, Theresa Rebeck, Luanne Rice, Annie Weisman and Cheryl L. West. Directed by Lisa Peterson. With: Mary Bacon, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Randy Graff, James Lecesne. An anthology of sketch plays, unified by a female-friendly theme and put together mostly by women? "Motherhood Out Loud," a show conceived by Susan Rose and Joan Stein and written by a dozen women and a couple of guys, sounds made-to-order for the "Love, Loss and What I Wore" audience. But despite prior showings at Hartford Stage and the Geffen Playhouse, the material has yet to jell. Writing is uneven, format needs an overhaul, and the whole show should check into a spa for a style makeover. The collective message of these 20 vignettes -- written by the impressive likes of Beth Henley, Theresa Rebeck and novelist Luanne Rice -- would have it known that motherhood is exhausting, terrifying, but ultimately joyous work. Taken individually, however, the show's bits and pieces give off mixed, even counterintuitive signals. Rachel Hauck's abstract set puts a cheery face on motherhood, but then the pointless graphics and dull video projections make it look downright dreary. More unkindly, the drab costumes imply that, once women become mothers, they forget how to dress themselves. The chronological timeline also does the material a disservice by suggesting that all the tender, funny, and endearing aspects of being a mother are confined to the early years. "New in the Motherhood," a clever sketch by Lisa Loomer, finds thesp Mary Bacon in wry humor as a laid-back mom trying to get the hang of playground protocol ("Can't we just let 'em duke it out?") and secretly proud of her naughty little boy ("Put the little girl down, Harry"). In Michele Lowe's low-keyed monologue, "Queen Esther," Randy Graff ("City of Angels") makes sensitive work of an understanding mother whose 7-year-old son wants to wear barrettes in his hair and dress up as Queen Esther for Purim. Some sketches take on predictable subjects, like birth pains and sleep deprivation, in predictable ways. Others show some originality in dealing with thorny issues like adoption, gay parenting, and, in a quietly moving monologue by Rice, the challenge of being a stepmother. But once past infancy and early childhood, it's all loss, emptiness and sorrow. The kids grow up, go off to college, get married, go to war, and, at the bitter end, watch their mothers grow old and helpless. Some playwrights' voices are more captivating than others. But by the end of the evening, they all sound pretty depressing.Sets, Rachel Hauck; costumes, David C. Woolard; lighting, Christopher Kuhl; sound, Jill BC DuBoff; projections, Jan Hartley; animation, Emily Hubley; production stage manager, Donald Fried. Opened Oct. 4, 2011. Reviewed Oct. 2. IMDb Gets Into the Game Business With Free Mobile App

Beginning Tuesday, IMDb is offering its first game ever, IMDb Trivia, a free iPhone and iPod touch app available from iTunes. "We get over 100 million page views on our trivia pages each year," IMDb founder and CEO Col Needham tells The Hollywood Reporteras he unveils the game app. "Customers spend more than 4 million hours a year on IMDb trivia." Now they can whip out their mobiles and play IMDb's games, then brag about their scores on Facebook and the Apple Game Center. But much ofIMDb's trivia is contributed by its millions of users, and not all of the items are as good as the editor-created news items on IMDb. "What the trivia game does is take the fun ones and interesting ones and present them in a very addictive, fun, small package," says IMDb head of mobile Kintan Brahmbhatt. If the first games (Hollywood Hits, Sneak Peek, TV Favorites, Family Movies and Blockbuster Films) pall, you can buy more for 99 cents.About 15 million IMDb apps have been installed on Apple mobiles, and more than 10 million on Android. Needham's one regret is that he didn't have a handheld device to rely on the day he was called in to meet Bezos, who is notorious for testing new hires with unsettling questions (such as, "How many windows are there in Seattle?"). "You have no idea what it's like to be a newly acquired company in front of the parent company and people are firing random trivia questions at you, and you have to get them right," says Needham. "Game play is very suited for helping the brain remember things. It makes you feel smarter about entertainment. So we're here to make everybody able to answer trivia questions." Needham vows to double IMDb's app starts in 2011, and has one more ambition. "I'm hoping to preserve my high score on the Sneak Peek pack." Related Topics IMDB iTunes

Marilu Henner Sunday, 12 ,. 19, 2010. Which was your day CBS broadcast a an hour set of Marilu Henner's rare condition - highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) - that provides her a chance to remember everything. Only six known people on the planet get it, after the special broadcast, "everything transformed," Henner informs TVGuide.com. Curiosity peaked, she's taking part in additional studies, she's writing a magazine, and also the greatest change of, she's a brand new gig: like a consultant on CBS' new show Memorable. Starring Poppy Montgomery as Barbara Wells, a NY City cop with HSAM (that was formerly known as hyperthymesia), the drama is dependant on J. Robert Lennon's short story "The Rememberer." The pilot script have been shelved for any couple of years until Henner's an hour report arrived.Fall TV: Obtain the lowdown about this season's must-see new shows"They required it out of the box and stated, 'This will probably be an excellent show since people understand what this really is and it is being investigated,'" Henner states. "[CBS Entertainment Leader] Nina Tassler, that has known me for any very long time, requested me to participate it. I stated, 'Oh yeah, I'd love to become a consultant.' The show shoots in NY and that i live [in La]. I recieve to use and speak with the authors and provide them ideas, read all of the scripts."But many importantly, she reaches put her memory to make use of and fact-check."[They sent us a preview], and so i use the internet also it states, 'Hyperthymesia! Six people on the planet have this! These folks remember everything!' Then you definitely see someone say, 'Hey, Barbara, demonstrate to them that factor you need to do. March 27, 1998.' And thus I am thinking, 'That would be a Friday, I travelled back from NY to La,AInch Henner states. "And she or he goes, 'It would be a Tuesday.' And That I go, 'No! No! It had been a Friday!' I start texting Erectile dysfunction [Redlich, the show's creator]! ... They wound up altering it simply because they needed to. I stated, 'You need to establish right right from the start that she's proficient at this. Not the very first factor as they are and she's losing it.' ... So I am always catching such things as that within the script. Or there is a mention of the a bit of music. They stated it arrived on the scene in 1983 and that i stated, 'No, it arrived on the scene in 1985.'"Watch the an hour set of Marilu HennerHenner has known since she was 6 that they comes with an unusual memory, but i never thought a lot of it until a buddy introduced up when she was 18 - or even more particularly, on Sunday, May 24, 1970 - and she or he began having to pay focus on other individuals reminiscences. The first kind Taxi star takes note of every day strongly and let you know everything of the items she experienced. The continual stockpiling of knowledge isn't overwhelming for Henner and she or he never struggles to consider anything, however the same can not be stated for that others with HSAM. Jill Cost, who also is able and made an appearance on the Primetime special, was greatly overcome through the skill, which came like a shock to Henner. "I believe, on paper Barbara, they kind of required that aspect from [Price's] story, however it never was overwhelming for me personally. It is simply the best organization tool," Henner states. "It is simply recorded after which it's there after which it is not difficult access. Although I have seen my brain scans and they are pretty freaky!"Taking much more poetic license using the show, Redlich & Co. incorporated a caveat with Carrie's memory: The only real factor she does not remember may be the evening of her sister's murder. "Certainly I didn't have anything distressing like this which was blocked out, but this really is television, so we must allow it to be interesting," Henner, 59, states. "I've no clue [when the others with HSAM have blocked something out]. We did not enter group therapy. But it is a significant story point."One factor she was adament about was how you can portray Carrie's flashbacks. Individuals with HSAM see everything through their very own eyes again. Quite simply, they are not watching themselves, à la Scrooge inside a Christmas Carol. "However, you can't come with an actress having a camera on her behalf temple ... so that they get it done in an exceedingly interesting way," Henner states. "You realize she's in her own body in present time reliving it, being within herself. They reveal her, for instance, kneeling within the body and she or he takes note of, and you get the drift that she's back in the crime scene.Fall Preview: Get scoop in your favorite coming back showsHenner will guest-star on the program, probably throughout November sweeps, as Carrie's aunt that has Alzheimer's disease. Meanwhile, she is constantly on the dole out personal tales for that show to include, is finishing her book about memory and it is tormenting her 15-year-old boy, Joey, who she thinks has HSAM too. He can't be examined until he's 16 which is unknown if HSAM is hereditary because nobody else by using it has children. "He isn't possessing it yet, however i know he's it," Henner states. "It isn't he does not be honest he does not desire to be challenged an excessive amount of. I sometimes the wrong date only for him to visit, 'No, Mother, you are wrong. You had been mad at me on that day due to blah-blah-blah.' 'No, I do not remember being mad to you.A Therefore we shuttle.InchUtilizing just a little whitened mislead wreck havoc on her boy, however, may be the only time Henner would ever lie. "I love precision. Furthermore I wish to be right, however i could not track wrong since several situations are connected," she states. "[HSAM] is completely a blessing! My dear gosh!
